Reader Feedback 2 - Politics and Porn

Hiya Ashraf,

Me wanted to comment on “Reader Feedback - Politics & Porn“. I’m delighted to hear you are planning to activate comments again. Not many good Maldivian blogs out there and I rather like yours.

About that post, Politics and Porn, I loved the sarcasm! Although, I’m not sure whether I should be glad I read the post or curse my fate for having read it. I have tried to avoid anything or anyone Maldivian for so long I’ve forgotten what it’s like to be Maldivian. I used to tell my mates being a Maldivian is to know your heart will be broken by the time you’re 20. Not because of some bloke, but because of the society Maldivians live in. So many intelligent kids out there who finish CHSE… most of them rot away in some govt office hoping for a scholarship. They’ll probably work part time too. Some where along the way they’ll get married and then will come the battle of building that bit of land they inherited. After that they’ll be working night and day to be able to give their kids the education they never got. My parents were like that, although my Dad was lucky to get a scholarship. But all his life he has been working to give me and my sibling a better education than he and my Mum got. Though I am infinitely grateful for their sacrifice, there are times I wish he’d take a break and do something for himself. Surely there’s more than this (i.e. a lifetime of struggling) for a Maldivian? I mean there gotta be more than this. I wonder if the youth even realise there is more to life than posting pics of girls in forums or worshipping the unwritten holy law that says “thou shalt go for ‘coffee-ing’ at least once everyday”. I was once talking politics with my Mum and she surprised me by saying, “But this is the best we get”. Is it me or does that sound like a defeatist attitude? Mum says it’s not a defeatist attitude she sports but she’s merely calling a spade as a spade. In other words, Real Politika.

Do you, as a Maldivian, reckon there is hope for us? Are there days when you feel like pulling out your hair because you want better for you and your people but just know how to make it possible?

I’m sorry for the weirdness of this e-mail. I’m having one of those I-wanna-save-the-world kinda days.

Mary-Jo.
